Easy & Irresistible Apple Cake—Made in Your Bread Oven

We don’t know about you, but when apples turn golden and sink into a soft, buttery crumb, it’s hard not to call that pure comfort. And the best part? You don’t even need a fancy setup—just your trusty Segretto cast-iron bread oven.

This apple cake is simple, honest, and oh-so-rewarding. Sweet apples kissed with almond liqueur, warm cinnamon in the crumb, and a crust that only cast iron can deliver. It’s the kind of bake that feels rustic and indulgent all at once.

🍎 Ingredients (Yield: 1 cake)

  • 3 large apples, peeled and cored

  • ½ lemon, juiced

  • 2 cups (470 ml) flour

  • 2 tablespoons (30 ml) baking powder

  • ½ teaspoon (2.5 ml) salt

  • ½ teaspoon (2.5 ml) cinnamon

  • ¾ cup (180 ml) butter

  • 1 cup (240 ml) sugar

  • 3 eggs, whisked

  • 1 ounce (30 ml) almond liqueur

🥣 Method

  1. Preheat like you mean it. Heat your oven to 350 °F (175 °C) and place your Segretto bread oven inside to warm through. Once hot, lightly grease the interior or line the base with parchment.

  2. Prep the apples. Slice apples thinly and toss them with lemon juice so they stay fresh and bright.

  3. Mix the dry. In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon.

  4. Cream the butter & sugar. In another bowl, beat butter and sugar until fluffy and pale. Add the eggs, then almond liqueur, mixing until smooth.

  5. Bring it together. Gradually fold the dry mixture into the wet until just combined.

  6. Fold and layer. Stir in two-thirds of the apple slices. Pour the batter into the warmed bread oven, smoothing the top, then arrange the rest of the apple slices in a neat fan.

  7. Bake patiently. Bake uncovered for 15 minutes, then cover loosely with foil. Continue baking another 45 minutes—or until a toothpick comes out clean from the center.

  8. Cool & serve. Let the cake rest 15–20 minutes before carefully removing it from the bread oven. Place on a serving plate, slice, and enjoy.

Why It Shines in Cast Iron

The Segretto bread oven traps steam, keeping the crumb tender while giving the edges that subtle caramelized bite. Think of it as a hug for your cake: warm, slow, and steady. The apples soften into the batter, the cinnamon wakes them up, and the almond liqueur adds just the right whisper of depth.

Final Note

Whether you share it fresh from the oven or sneak a slice for tomorrow’s breakfast (if it lasts that long), this apple cake is the kind of recipe you’ll want to keep close. Rustic, simple, and baked with love—because sometimes, the best reason to bake is simply because you can.
